LABOR AND BIRTH

At the end of your pregnancy we are in close contact. When we have established you are in labor your midwives will come to your home.

We believe that mothers and parents know best how to birth their baby. We are witnesses to this process and work to maintain a physical and emotional safety net as you birth yourself, and your baby into a new phase of life. We believe that birth is a normal, physiological event and have the utmost reverence to this rite of passage.

We are well trained to keep you in the “normal” realms and are constantly assessing and taking action if you are not. Our hands have been well trained to resolve complications that can arise during birth. When transport to the hospital is necessary we go with you and serve as an advocate by your side until you give birth.

Araya Montero LM,cpm,BSM~ Founder/Owner

Araya grew up in the eastern Upper Peninsula on the shores of Lake Superior. Growing up in a large extended family, where someone was always pregnant or nursing, sparked a deep curiosity around the childbearing years. This path of inquiry led Araya into work as an organic farmer. Through seasons of working with the land from seeds to harvest, knowing the moons cycles, and beginning the journey into herbalism, her path to home birth midwifery became clear.

Araya moved to Portland Oregon in 2014 to attend Birthingway College of Midwifery. During this schooling time, she apprenticed with several different midwives and attended births in the home setting and at birth center, whether in the heart of Portland or deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. Her education encompassed traditional midwifery as well as up to date, evidence based practices. From plant medicine to pharmacology, Araya learned to draw from many different modalities, always with physical/emotional safety in mind.  She graduated in 2018 with a Bachelors of Science in Midwifery and became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). Araya is a Licensed Midwife in Michigan and is certified in Neonatal resuscitation and CPR.

Araya opened her home birth practice, Two Hearted Midwifery, in 2018. She opened the Traverse City Birth Center in 2023.

Araya lives in Traverse City with her wife, and gave birth to their daughter in 2022 at home with the help of midwives.

Araya is assisted by other community midwives and birth assistants depending on where you live.

Kind words from clients…

“Araya has been a true gem of wisdom and support for me and my family. We were honored to work with Araya throughout our pregnancy, labor & postpartum. Her balance of in depth knowledge and overwhelming compassion created a sacred trust between us. I will be forever thankful for her calming presence during our beautiful birth.”

~ Sage, mama to Samaya

“Araya was one of my three midwives at both of my daughter's births, and a gift to me every day that I could spend with her!  Her gentle and empathetic spirit soothed me into speaking my story, and accepting wisdom for the journey ahead.  She made me feel like I could find the strength in myself to walk into this oh so intense time!  She brought so much passion, information and education to my prenatal process too.  At my birthing time, she was sensitive, informative and so caring for me in my intense time.  She really has a love, joy and passion for midwifery, and she is also incredibly focused on doing a great job of the medical care part of it all.  She made me feel safe, listened to and protected- and I am so grateful that she was there for the two most beautiful days of my life!  She is a truly gifted and devoted midwife, and any family would be lucky to have her there at their birthing time.”

~Meghan, mama to Selah and Adira

"We felt very lucky to have Araya on our birth team!  Looking back, it really feels like the Universe was looking out for me by bringing us together.  She approached every aspect of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period with strength, grace, and a nurturing embrace that held our whole family as we journeyed from a couple, got to know our baby in the womb, and passed through the sacred doors to bring our son Earthside.  I think what stands out the most is how we were all so held in Araya's love and grounded strength along this journey.  I looked forward to every appointment and felt relieved when Araya arrived on the day my labor started.  I know I shouted for Araya to hold my hand as my husband got to be n position to cradle baby at the final push. She was so helpful in sharing her herbal knowledge as well, which was huge in my own recovery and as I navigated breastfeeding.  Thank you!!"
